Background Info on the Prizes.
The Commonwealth Writers' Prize.
The Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, organised and funded by the Common Wealth Foundation, is a leading award for fiction that was first awarded in 1987. The Commonwealth Foundation is an intergovernmental organisation working in the 53 countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. The aim of the Prize is to encourage new Commonwealth fiction, and to ensure that works of merit reach a wider audience outside their country of origin.
The Prize covers the Commonwealth regions of Africa, the Caribbean and Canada, Europe and South Asia and South East Asia and Pacific. It is a prize that is both regional and global. In each of the four regions, two prizes of £1,000 are awarded: one for the Best Book and one for the Best First Book.
The eight winners that emerge from the regional judging are announced in March and then go through to the final phase of the competition, to decide the overall Commonwealth winners for Best Book and Best First Book, with prizes of £10,000 and £5,000 respectively.
So Cameroonian writers see if you can at least grab a prize in the Africa region if not the overalll prize :).
Note*: Entries must be made by the publisher and should only include work originally written in English.
Visit their website here to learn more about the prize, how to apply and the rules for applying.
The Caine Prize for African Writing:
Contrary to the afore-mentioned Commonwealth Prize, the Caine Prize for African Writing is opened only to African nationals (either born there or parents born there, so diasporans who have changed nationality, no fear, you're still eligible :)).
The Caine Prize for African Writing is awarded annually to an African short story writer published in English, whether in Africa or elsewhere. The £10,000 prize was founded in England in 2000 and it was named in memory of the late Sir Michael Harris Caine, former Chairman of Booker plc.
Rules for entry include:
- Unpublished work is not eligible for the Caine Prize
- Submissions should be made by publishers only
- They require 6 copies of the published work
- Only fictional work is eligible

Good luck to you all!
